Registration of Newly Purchased Motor Vehicles after September 1, 2024
Osage Nation Members:
Please be advised that a new Oklahoma law, the “Mason Treat Act” (“Act”), takes effect on September 1, 2024. The Act requires pre-registration of all motor vehicles purchased in Oklahoma, whether through a dealership or private sale, regardless of whether the vehicle will later be registered with a tribal nation or in another state.
Members of the Osage Nation can still register and tag your vehicle with the Osage Nation.
The Osage Nation Tax Commission (“Tax Commission”) adopted a rule to allow our members to pre-register with the Nation to avoid having to place a temporary state license plate and decals on their vehicle.
When purchasing a new or used vehicle from a dealership, the Tax Commission strongly recommends our members do the following:
- If applicable, remove your Osage Nation license plate from your trade-in vehicle. DO NOT GIVE THE LICENSE PLATE TO THE DEALERSHIP.
- Inform the dealership you will register your vehicle with the Osage Nation. The dealership should have the option to select “tribe” or “other” in the pre-registration process. You will need to request the following:
- A paper title (not electronic); and
- Do not submit your email address and phone number to Service Oklahoma.
- A paper title (not electronic); and
- The dealership will provide you with a temporary paper tag that will expire after ten (10) days.
- Within those ten (10) days, you must appear in person to the Osage Nation Tax Commission with documents from the dealership to pre-register your vehicle.
- Once all registration documentation has been provided, the Tax Commission will issue you a license plate and decals. The decals will expire the month following the purchase. For example, if you purchase a vehicle in September 2024, the decal will expire at the end of October 2024. All registration fees will be paid at this time.
- Discard the temporary license plate and decals received from the State.
- After you receive the official title for your new vehicle, you must submit your title to the Tax Commission to receive your complete registration and new standard yearly decal. Members must submit the title in person or by certified mail. DO NOT submit your title through regular mail. The Tax Commission is not responsible for lost titles.
When purchasing a new or used vehicle in a private sale, the Tax Commission strongly recommends our members do the following:
- Skip the pre-registration process and immediately register your vehicle with the Osage Nation Tax Commission.
OR
- As a buyer, you complete the pre-registration process online to receive your temporary paper tag and
- Appear in person to the Osage Nation Tax Commission within ten (10) days from the date of sale to register and tag your newly purchased vehicle.
Other Recommendations:
- Obey all time frames listed to avoid receiving a ticket from local law enforcement.
- DO NOT personally submit or allow another person to submit your existing Osage Nation license plate information to Service Oklahoma.
- If you purchase a vehicle from out-of-state, you are not required to pre-register your vehicle with Service Oklahoma. Register and tag your vehicle with the Osage Nation as soon as you receive your title and have obtained all necessary paperwork.
