Osage Nation Principal Chief Joe Tillman recently traveled to Washington, D.C., to participate in the White House Tribal Leadership Conference, joining tribal leaders from across Indian Country and federal officials to discuss issues affecting tribal nations and their citizens.
The conference featured remarks from several senior federal officials, including United States Vice President J.D. Vance, Secretary of the Interior Doug Burgum, Assistant Secretary for Indian Affairs Billy Kirkland, Secretary of Homeland Security Markwayne Mullin, and Treasurer of the United States Brandon Beach. Speakers addressed a variety of issues impacting tribal nations, including the administration's efforts to modernize trust and probate services, strengthen infrastructure and public safety in Indian Country, expand economic opportunity, and improve coordination between tribal governments and federal agencies. Kathy Burgum also spoke about addressing addiction and supporting recovery efforts in Native communities.
The conference provided an opportunity for tribal leaders to engage directly with federal partners on a wide range of priorities, including modernizing probate and trust services, improving access to federal programs, strengthening tribal sovereignty, and addressing the evolving needs of Native communities.
For Chief Tillman, the visit was an important step in advancing the Osage Nation's commitment to strengthening relationships with federal agencies while advocating for the interests of the Osage people.
"These conversations are important because they help ensure tribal voices are heard where decisions are being made," said Chief Tillman. "The Osage Nation has a responsibility to advocate for our people, build strong government-to-government relationships, and pursue opportunities that will benefit our Nation today and for future generations."
In addition to participating in the conference, Chief Tillman met with the offices of Senator James Lankford and Congressman Frank Lucas to further strengthen the Osage Nation's relationships with Oklahoma's congressional delegation. During his meeting with Congressman Lucas, Chief Tillman discussed the ongoing importance of the Osage Nation Reservation's status and the Nation's priorities related to protecting and advancing its sovereign interests. Congressman Lucas expressed his support for the Osage Nation's position, reinforcing the strong government-to-government relationship between the Nation and Oklahoma's federal representatives.
Chief Tillman emphasized that while national conversations are valuable, their purpose is to create meaningful results at home on the Osage Nation Reservation.
"While these trips are meaningful, I am always glad to return home and put this work into action for the Osage people," Tillman said. "Every meeting, conversation, and relationship we build should contribute to making our Nation stronger and improving the lives of Osages and our communities.”
The visit reflects the Tillman Administration's ongoing commitment to intergovernmental advocacy and ensuring the Osage Nation remains actively engaged in discussions affecting tribal sovereignty, economic development, infrastructure, education, healthcare, and the long-term success of Osage Nation.
As the Osage Nation continues to strengthen relationships with federal, tribal, state, and local partners, participation in events such as the White House Tribal Leadership Conference helps ensure the Nation's priorities are represented while creating opportunities to advance meaningful outcomes for the Osage people.
