PAWHUSKA, Okla. (June 18, 2015) — Hallie Winter, Osage, has started as the new curator for the Osage Museum in Pawhuska. She has more than nine years of museum exhibition and preservation experience from several prestigious museums and galleries in Buffalo, NY. Former director, Kathryn Red Corn, retired in late February after working at the museum for sixteen years.
Winter said working for the Nation to preserve Osage art, history, and culture is an honor, “I am honored and sincerely delighted to be working for the Nation. This position allows me to contribute and impact my nation in a positive way. I not only get to discover more about my heritage but will be able to teach others as well."
The museum curator will manage the museum’s day to day operations as well as organize displays and preservation of the museum’s collections.
Winter said as curator she plans to update the building and increase display space. She said, “It is truly important that we maintain and strengthen the museum for our people as well as the general public,” she added that through her work she will support Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear’s goal to, “expand language and retain culture.”
She said the Osage Museum’s mission is, “to educate the public about our history, customs and traditions of the Osage people, and to keep activities and exhibits as current as possible, making the museum experience a truly pleasant and informative one for all ages.”
On November 17, 2009 the Osage Museum was honored as an Oklahoma Literary Landmark by the Friends of Libraries in Oklahoma. It was established as the Osage Museum in 1938. The museum has acquired a considerable collection of Osage art and cultural artifacts including an extensive collection of original Osage allottee photographs and ten full size plaster busts of Osage individuals as commissioned by the Smithsonian’s Anthology Department.
