Osage Nation Fairfax Wellness Center Gets New Site and Bigger Building
Groundbreaking Scheduled for May 23rd
From Osage Nation CommunicationsFairfax, Okla., (Monday, May 14, 2018)—The Osage Nation (ON) will break ground at noon in Fairfax on Wednesday, May 23, 2018 for the site of the new Osage Nation Fairfax Wellness Center. ON Tribal Development released the details of the groundbreaking last week. The new and larger facility will be located next to the ON Language Center at 255 North 1stStreet.
The purpose of the new site falls in line with two of ON Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear’s goals for the ON, “develop a comprehensive healthcare system” and “promote healthy communities through wellness initiatives and partnerships.” The new building will be 4,609 square feet and will be completed in 2019 with a specific date to be determined.
Funding for the site was successfully applied for by the ON Grants Department who wrote to HUD about the need for the larger updated site, “Native Americans are leading the country in serious, chronic, health issues such as obesity, diabetes and cardiovascular disease…The current facility is too small and not cost effective…Providing Fairfax area residents with a year-round, climate-controlled location that is nearby to learn about healthy lifestyles and participate in physical activities gives them the opportunity to improve their health.”
There are two more ON Wellness Centers located on the ON Reservation located in Pawhuska and Hominy. Hominy’s new Wellness Center broke ground last year and the ribbon cutting is scheduled for the day after the Fairfax groundbreaking on Thursday, May 24that noon. All are welcome and encouraged to attend both events.
