The Osage Nation Receives Grant from Southern Plains Tribal Health Board

For the second year, the Osage Nation has received the CDC Good Health and Wellness in Indian Country Grant (GHWIC), in the amount of $15,000.

Osage Nation Public Health Nurse Jaime Clark commented, “Teaching parents and our youth to live a healthier lifestyle through growing, gathering, and hunting is the focus of the program”. New data claims the obesity rate for the Native adult population in Oklahoma has risen
39%-46% in 2018.

In 2018, the Osage Nation had master gardeners from the OSU Extension Office instruct members of the community how to cultivate and grow. Each representative group will receive equipment, seeds, plants and other materials necessary to successfully implement a community garden in each of the districts.


Each district is utilizing the program to focus on individual community needs. The Hominy location is installing six raised beds and will have another area plowed for a corn field near the village chapel. The Fairfax Language group will also have six raised beds installed that will also serve as a summer project for their Kids Campus. The Pawhuska Community Health Representatives (CHR) will have elevated raised beds installed at the Civic Center which will serve elder nutritional needs.



According to the American Diabetes Association, “non-insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus is a major health problem in American Indian communities”. The prevalence of diabetes is higher among Native Americans than any other ethnic group in the United States. A health assessment recently conducted by Osage Nation PHN found that exercise and nutritional education were imperative to increase good health and well-being. The CDC’s Traditional Food Program has had great success reviving traditional food systems. By growing, gathering and hunting for food we can restore what was once traditional for Osage people.
