The Osage Nation marked a significant milestone last week as Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear signed two intergovernmental agreements with the City of Lake Ozark, strengthening the Nation’s partnership with local leaders and advancing plans for future development in the region.
The agreements establish a collaborative framework for coordinating infrastructure, public safety, and municipal services at Nation-owned property within the City of Lake Ozark. Together, they represent one of the most meaningful steps the Osage Nation has taken in Missouri - shaped by years of work to restore and strengthen the Nation’s connection to its ancestral homelands.
“Returning to our ancestral lands in Missouri is deeply meaningful for our people, and we are grateful for the welcome we have received from the Lake of the Ozarks community,” said Osage Nation Principal Chief Geoffrey Standing Bear. “We are committed to being prosperous, reliable partners who contribute to the long-term prosperity of the region while ensuring these efforts strengthen and support Osages for generations to come.”
The agreements reflect a shared understanding and respect for the Osage Nation and the City of Lake Ozark. One agreement outlines commitments related to infrastructure, including standard water and sewer services, public safety coordination, and financial contributions to the city. The second agreement ensures Lake Ozark police and fire departments will provide standard emergency response services to the Osage Nation property, consistent with services provided throughout the city. Together, the agreements also support the Nation’s continued advancement through the federal land-into-trust process, a critical step for long-term development.
“This is a proud and historic moment for the Osage Nation,” said Osage Casinos Chief Executive Officer Kimberly Pearson. “We are grateful for the partnership we’ve built with the City of Lake Ozark and appreciate the leadership of Mayor Ridgely, the City Council, and city staff as we continue working together.” The Lake of the Ozarks region holds deep historical significance for the Osage people, whose ancestral homelands extend throughout Missouri. This progress reflects a shared vision rooted in partnership, mutual respect, and opportunity for future generations.
