OSAGE NATION RESERVATION, Okla. (May 8, 2025)—As part of ongoing efforts to promote cultural education and language revitalization, the Wahzhazhe Cultural Center and Osage Nation Language Department release “Hand Game.” This addition is part of a robust series of videos born out of the CARES Act funding beginning in 2021. Over 25 videos are available to Osages worldwide, with more on the way.
Hand Games are a cultural activity that crosses generations of Osage families and is central to gatherings and celebrations. Hand Game highlights Osages Bruce Cass and Eddie Redeagle, who provide history and education on the importance of hand games.
“You can do a lot with hand games,” says Eddie Redeagle. “You’ve got the drum, you’ve got the song, and then you’ve got the human feelings, and that’s where the social comes in. It’s a drawing card to bring people together. Hand Games is not the deal, it’s the people.”
Osage Nation Language Department Specialist Noah Shadlow translates English to Osage to provide a tool for all Osages across the globe to continue their language learning efforts and connect to culture, further strengthening Osage Nation’s sovereignty.
