Community partners collaborate to improve outdoor recreation spaces for rural schools

Local leaders and community partners gathered at Barnsdall Elementary on Wednesday, March 18, 2026, to celebrate the launch of the first project in a new initiative to improve outdoor recreational spaces for students in rural communities.

The initiative began when Osage Nation Congresswoman Alice Goodfox contacted the Osage Nation Development Office to identify resources that could support outdoor recreation needs in smaller, rural school districts.

“This initiative is about ensuring every child, no matter how small or rural their community, has access to safe and welcoming spaces to play, grow, and thrive,” said Congresswoman Goodfox. “I’m grateful to our partners who stepped up to make this project a reality for Barnsdall students.

Since the initiative’s inception, the Secretary of the Development Office has met with representatives from Prue, Shidler, Fairfax, Barnsdall, and Wynona Public Schools. Recognizing that each school has unique needs, the Development Office worked collaboratively with Marathon Energy, Enbridge, Self-Governance funds, and the Osage Nation Roads Department to maximize available resources and support each community.

The Barnsdall project marks the first effort under this initiative. Improvements include upgrading the school’s basketball goal, which was previously installed on a dirt surface. As part of the project, the Osage Nation Roads Department is constructing a concrete court, creating a safer and more versatile space for students to play basketball and participate in other activities.

“We are incredibly grateful for this generous investment in our playground,” said Dr. Melanie Sweeney, Principal of Barnsdall Elementary. “This new concrete court provides a safer, more functional space where our students can play, learn, and grow together. It will have a lasting impact on our school community.”

Barnsdall Elementary is the first of several schools being considered for similar improvements as resources become available. This initiative highlights the strength of collaboration among local schools, community leaders, the Osage Nation, and industry partners, all working together to invest in the well-being of rural communities.
