Osage Family Violence Prevention Now Provides Support Group for Sexual Assault Survivors

Pawhuska, Okla. (Thursday, Aug. 1, 2018)–The Healing Circle, a new support group for victims of sexual assault, is a recent addition to the long list of lifesaving services now provided by the Osage Nation Family Violence Prevention Department (ONFVPD). According to ONFVPD Director, Olivia Gray, “This support group is for those who are suffering the repercussions of a sexual assault whether that assault occurred a week ago or thirty years ago. when you were a child.”
The trauma of sexual assault has long term effects according to the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN), “…33 percent of women who are raped contemplate suicide…13 percent of women who are raped attempt suicide…Approximately 70 percent of rape or sexual assault victims experience moderate to severe distress, a larger percentage than for any other violent crime.”
In October of 2017, ONFVPD was awarded a Tribal Sexual Assault Services Program grant from the Office of Violence Against Women (OVW). ONFVPD has always offered services to victims of sexual assault, with the grant ONFVPD can expand those services in ways that were not possible before, including support group just for victims of sexual assault.
According to OVW, there is a significant overlap between sexual assault and domestic violence and The Healing Circle addresses this issue. Gray said, “When clients come in for domestic violence services it is very common for us to find that they are also victims of sexual assault and/or childhood sexual assault. In order to help clients heal from their trauma we must offer a myriad of services to meet their specific needs.”
The Healing Circle is held every Wednesday from 5:00 PM to 6:00 PM at the OVW offices in Pawhuska and will be facilitated by the OVW Traditional Healing Coordinator, Arleata Snell.
