Osage Nation Financial Assistance Department Hosts Wrestling Camp with Chance “Black Eagle” Rencountre
Pawhuska, Ok. – Last week Osage Nation Financial Assistance Department and UFC Fighter, Chance “Black Eagle” Rencountre, hosted a wrestling camp for wrestlers of all experience levels at the Pawhuska High School wrestling room. The event was from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., dividing beginning learners from advanced learners.
Jennifer Oberly, Director of the ON Financial Assistance Department, along with Tim Lookout, assisted the camp instructors, supported the students, and provided lunches and drinks. The ON Financial Assistance Department also supplied and presented “TEAM BLACK EAGLE” T-shirts to each participant of the camp.
The ON Financial Assistance Department functions to aid members of the Osage Nation, and other Native Americans residing in the service area, during times of limited resources. Within the department is the Community Service Block Grant (CSBG). The CSBG funds the Tsi-Wah-Zhu-Pi Program which serves low-income Native American families. The program is designed to help families spend time together and allow their children to participate in sports and activities they otherwise would not be able to attend.
Rencountre was able to make an important connection with the youth the Tsi-Wah-Zhu-Pi Program targets. Rencontre began the wrestling camp by explaining to the students how he was raised in Pawhuska, Oklahoma by a single mother who worked multiple jobs to support him, and he did not have all the privileges of other athletes. He described his dedication to his ambition saying, “I wrestled here in this room, later won wrestling awards in college and made it to where I am today by hard work and not giving up.”
Not only does he pay homage to the Osage Nation and his hometown of Pawhuska, but he also places value on his family and giving back to his community. He took the time to connect with each young student at the camp, imparting kindness and useful wrestling tips.
The ON Financial Assistance Department Director and staff understand the importance of creating opportunities for Native American youth to be able to live stronger than their challenges.
Tim Lookout, the ON Financial Assistance Youth Coordinator, commented on the Tsi-Wah-Zhu-Pi Program, “I love what I do, working with Native American youth. They are our future, our foundation.”
