Osage Nation Presents Teen Dating Violence Awareness Education: “Too Good For Violence”
OSAGE RESERVATION, OKLA. (February 28, 2022) –The Osage Nation Prevention Program (ONPP) teamed up with Osage Nation Family Violence Prevention (ONFVP), on February 15, 2022, to present Teen Dating Violence awareness education to resident students at contributing school districts.
ONPP implements the Too Good Program at local schools within the Osage Reservation. According to the program summary, “Too Good is a comprehensive family of evidence-based substance use and violence prevention interventions designed to mitigate the risk factors linked to problem behaviors and build protection within the child to resist problem behaviors.” Daisy Spicer serves as the Prevention Project Coordinator at the Osage Nation.
According to the program description, “Too Good develops and reinforces a comprehensive skills framework including setting reachable goals, making responsible decisions, identifying and managing emotions, and effective communication in addition to peer-pressure refusal, pro-social peer bonding, and peaceful conflict resolution skills.”
Lessons are presented in classrooms K-12th grade. The program also includes a teen dating violence lesson. Spicer reached out to the ONFVP and invited staff to help present the message. ONFVP worked with teenage students to make a pledge against teen dating violence entitled “These Hands Don’t Hurt.”
ONFVP team member Deanna Cosby describes her role in the classroom experience, “I created the pledge that we presented after the lesson allowing the students the option of dipping their hands into orange paint and leaving their handprints to signify that they are ‘Taking a Stand Against Unhealthy Relationships.’”
The two ON departments will continue to work together over the next few weeks to deliver this message to multiple, participating schools.
